#VOTEPROCHOICE Co-founder Heidi Sieck: “With Roe in Kavanagh’s crosshairs, this year will be the fight of our freedom”
On Roe v. Wade’s 46th anniversary, #VOTEPROCHOICE Co-founder and CEO Heidi Sieck released the following statement today:
“We need to very clear about what’s at stake — there might not be a 47th anniversary of Roe v Wade next year. Trump and his administration are determined to overturn Roe — and now that Kavanaugh sits on the Supreme Court, we may be just months away from repeal. This is a national crisis.
The truth is that America is a staunchly prochoice nation; 72% of American voters support reproductive freedom and access to abortion — that includes Republicans, Democrats, Independents and everyone else. In 2019, this prochoice nation must rise up to protect reproductive freedom in every way possible. We cannot and will not allow an overly-funded, brazenly vocal conservative minority steal our body autonomy. We will protest. We will vote. We will put our bodies on the line. This is the ultimate fight for freedom.”
Two weeks into 2019, lawmakers in 17 states have already prepared new abortion restrictions Missouri, South Carolina, Florida, and Kentucky have all introduced “heartbeat bans”—which would ban abortions before most people even know they’re pregnant—already this year.
11 states have pre-Roe abortion bans that could be activated if Roe is overturned.
Four states already have egregious “trigger bans” to automatically outlaw abortion and throw people in jail if Roe is overturned— Louisiana, Mississippi, North and South Dakota. In some of these states, there is no exception for rape or incest. This is unconscionable.
